Lanka Comic Con presents – Geek On!

April is almost upon us. Easter, Sinhala & Tamil New Year and school holidays. There’s only so much house-cleaning, kokis- making, clothes shopping and visiting of 101 relatives that the Geek spirit can take. So whether you’re the one being harangued to clean your room or being dragged into the horrors of the House of Fashion holiday scrum, or you’re the person doing the haraguing and dragging, Lanka Comic Con’s Geek Pop-up Market can offer you a day of armistice for the entire family!

The Arthur C. Clarke Centennial Celebration is Tomorrow

Asha De Vos remembers Arthur C Clarke.

I was 17 years old, and the head of the Young Science Fiction Association - a group with more words in it's title, than members. We had asked Arthur C. Clarke to be our patron, and he asked me to drop by to find who we were, and what we were about. 

Whatever pitch I had, was likely useless. What convinced him was probably me being dumbstruck by all his books in the "Clarkives" as he called them. 

"See all these books?" he said.
"Yes."
"They're yours."

So began a very trying year of trying to come up with some sort of library to house the collection in. We succeeded - and then had to close it down. The gap year was ending, funds were low, and we had to be sure the books didn't end up being given away to wrap vadays in. So we gave it to my school library, where I hope, they still are. 

Many Sri Lankan Geeks have their own Arthur C Clarke stories, whether they're personal encounters, his books we've read, or other sources that were in turn heavily influenced by a writer audacious enough to but real science in his science fiction.

Big Data and Astronomy: Thilina Heenatigala will speak at the Arthur C Clarke Centennial

Thilina Heenatigala, an astronomy educator at the Leiden Observatory in The Netherlands, will be speaking at the Arthur C. Clarke Centennial Celebration, this weekend. He'll be talking about how Big Data is being used in astronomy.

From his brief: 

"Time just stopped for me, I think it stopped for everybody. My heart stopped. My breathing stopped," a 51-year-old Clarke said, describing how it felt to watch the lunar module touch down on the Apollo 11 mission.

The USB memory stick today is more powerful than the computers that put humans on the moon in the 60s. Decades later, the field of astronomy is generating astronomical size data. From 140 gigabits of raw science data every week produced by Hubble Space Telescope, upcoming Large Synoptic Survey Telescope expected to produce 20 terabits per night, to the future Square Kilometre Array facility expected to produce more data than we have on the entire Internet now. How does astronomers handle these big data? How are citizens helping that?"

Thilina is also a collaborator of International Astronomical Union's Office of Astronomy for Development (OAD) and Office for Astronomy Outreach (OAO). He also served as the General Secretary of Sri Lanka Astronomical Association which was founded by Sir Arthur C Clarke.

The Arthur C. Clarke Centennial Celebration is this weekend on Saturday at Trace Expert City. It marks 100 years since the birth of Arthur C Clarke, one of science fiction's most influential writers.  The ACC 100 is sponsored by Calcey Technologies. 

On the Harassment of Asus Lanka Comic Con Cosplayers

As you may know, recently there were several Facebook pages where pictures of our attending cosplayers (male and female) were shared with intent to degrade, intimidate, and bully.

This is treatment women especially are familiar with, not just after big events, but even when they leave the house to go to work. What will someone say to me today? Should I look away and say nothing? What will anyone else do - will they also look away and pretend like nothing happened?

For our part, it may seem we were asleep at the wheel when this online harassment took place. That's completely true - we haven't slept properly in days, and sleep is where we've been putting most of our spare time since the event ended. I accept that this is not an excuse, and for this I apologize for myself and my team. We should have been on this. 

However, the geek and cosplay community wasn't sleeping - and that's what I want to discuss. When these people were harassed by people who are quite literally losers, they immediately organized to report those posters and those pages. Their quick and overwhelming action led to one Facebook page being unpublished, and 5 more are now under review. The community then went one step further, setting up a page specifically to combat online harassment against other geeks. 

I cannot tell you how inspiring this is for me. How proud I am. They saw people being attacked - and they said something. They stepped up and acted. Decisive, united, action. 

We live in a time when the idea of treating people, as if they were people, is unpopular. Well for those who disagree with this, that's just too bad. As far as we can reach, we practice this.

And we will expect it.

So the American Ambassador is Coming to the Asus LCC2017. And it's official.

Atul Keshap, the US ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, is coming to the Asus Lanka Comic Con. 

Some of you may remember him, and also the Deputy Chief of Mission, Robert Hilton, incognito at the event last year. This time, ambassador Keshap is officially representing the United States.

As you may remember (because of course, you read everything I write on this blog) the Lanka Comic Con Trust received a grant recently from the US State Department, to start a nonprofit comic book press. Please join us in thanking our friends at the American Center Colombo, the State Department, and the ambassador, at the event!

He told me he was thinking about cosplaying as Kingpin.

ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ බොහෝම අවස්ථාවල අපි කොමික් වල 'පළමුවන මුද්‍රිත වෙළුම' දැක තිබුනට  ඒ මාලාව 'දෙවන වෙළුමක්' දක්වා යනවා අපි දකින්නේ බොහොම කලාතුරකිනි. දේශීය චිත්‍ර ශිල්පීන්ට හා කථා රචකයන්ට තියන ප්‍රධානම ගැටළුව වන්නේ වියදම් අභියෝගයන්ය. මේ හේතුව නිසා බොහෝ කලාකරුවන් තමන්ගේ නිර්මාණය ගැන කල්පනා කරන්නේ, ඔවුන්ගේ එදිනෙදා රැකියාවට යෑමට සැරසෙන විට කැඩපත දිහා බලා අතීතය අනුස්මරණය කරන විටය.

හැබැයි ඒ තත්වය අපට වෙනස් කළ හැකි නම්? මුද්‍රණ වියදම් ප්‍රබල ලෙස අඩු කරන්න අපිට හැකි වුනා නම්?

තිලානි අපට පැවසුවේ "මම මුද්‍රණ යන්ත්‍ර වල මිල ගණන් හා ඒවා වල තාක්ෂණික දත්ත පිළිබඳවත් ඒවා වල නියම ප්‍රමිතීන් හා එයට වැඩි පරිමාවක මුද්‍රණ කටයුතු දරාගන්න පුළුවන්ද යන දේවල් ගැන හොඳින් සොයා බැලුවා." කියාය. "මම පිටකොටුවට පවා ගියේ කඩදාසි සපයන්නවුන්ට කථා කර තොග මිල ගණන් සටහන් කර ගැනීමටය. මගේ වැඩකට නැති සැමියාද මැසිවිලි කිව් නමුත් කෙසේ හෝ මා සමඟ  හැම තැනටම ආවා."

දීර්ග කාලීන ස්වයංපෝශිත, අඩු පිරිවැයක් දරන මුද්‍රණාලයකට අවශ්‍ය ව්‍යාපාර ආකෘතිය  මදින් මද ඇය ගොඩ නැගුවා.

ඇමෙරිකානු මධ්‍යස්ථානය

ඇමෙරිකානු රාජ්‍ය තාන්ත්‍රික කාර්යාලයේ ජොශුවා ශෙන් මහතා අපට මෙහිදී මහත් උපකාරී වූවා. ඔහු මෙම අදහස ගැන බොහෝ උනන්දු වුනා. වසර ගණනක අර්බුදකාරී තත්වයන්ට මුහුණ දුන් ලංකාවේ ප්‍රජාවන් එකතු කිරීමට කොමික් කලාව තුලින් තරුණ පරපුරට හැකි වේවි යැයි ඔහු විශ්වාස කරනවා. ඔවුන්ට අපට උදව් කළ හැකි බව තහවුරු කළ ඔහු එයට ඉල්ලුම් කළ හැකි ක්‍රියා පිළිවෙත අනුගමනය කරන මෙන් පමණක් අපෙන් ඉල්ලා සිටියා. අපි අධෛර්ය වූ අවස්ථා වලදී පවා එම කාර්යන් දිගටම කරගන යන්න ඔහු අපව නිතර නිතර දිරි ගැන්වූවා.

අපි කිසිම කෙනෙක් ඒ වන විට ප්‍රතිදාන සඳහා අයදුම් ලියා තිබුනේ නෑ. එම අත්දැකීම ටිකක් මේ වගේ දනුනා අපිට..

අ-සාමාන්‍ය (Extra-Ordinary)

ලංකා කොමික් කොන් මුද්‍රණාලය මගින් පිට කරන ප්‍රථම කොමික් කථා මාලාව වන්නේ අ-සාමාන්‍ය (Extra-Ordinary) කථා පෙළයි. මෙය වර්තමාන ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ සිදුවනු ලබන අද්භූත සිද්ධි වටා ගෙතුන ප්‍රබන්ධයකි.

දැනට නිමවෙමින් පවතින අ-සාමාන්‍ය (Extra-Ordinary) කථා පෙළේ රූප සටහන් 

"මම කීර්තිමත් ප්‍රකාශකයින් පිට කරන කොමික් වලට හුඟක් ආශා කළාට ඒ කිසිම කථා පෙළක්  මගේ සංස්කෘතිය නියෝජනය කරන ඒවා නෙවෙයි," තිලානි අපට පැවසුවා. "මට ලියන්න අවශ්‍ය කරලා තිබුනේ ශ්‍රී ලාංකිකයින් හැටියට අපි කවුද කියන එක, අපේ ඉතිහාසය හා සංස්කෘතිය නිර්දේශනය කරන ගමන්, නූතන ආරකින් ගෙන හැර පෙන්විය හැකි දෙයක්."

අ-සාමාන්‍ය කථාමාලාව භාෂා තුනෙන්ම රචනය කිරීමෙන් සත්‍ය වශයෙන්ම ශ්‍රී ලාංකිකත්වය එම  ප්‍රබන්ධයට ලබා දීමට තිලානි බලාපොරොත්තු වෙනවා. ලංකා කොමික් කොන් මුද්‍රණාලය විසින් පරිවර්තන සේවාවන්ද ලබා දෙනු ඇත.

නිමේශ් නියෝමාල් නැමැති 'අ-සාමාන්‍ය' කොමික් කථා පෙළේ චිත්‍ර ශිල්පියා අපිට පැවසුවේ, "ලංකාවේ දැනට බොහෝ නවක තරුණ කොමික් චිත්‍ර ශිල්පීන් බිහි වෙමින් පවතිනවා."  ඔහු විසින් මීට පෙර 'ද ග්‍රේ වෝකර්' යන නමින්ද කොමික් කථා පෙළක්ද ඉදිරිපත් කර තියෙනවා. "මේ නවකයින් ඩිජිටල් ප්‍රකාශණ වලට පමණක් යොමු වෙන්නේ, මුද්‍රණ ගාස්තු හා පිරිවැයන් අධික නිසාවෙනි. ඒ වුනත් නියම කොමික් කියන දේ කඩදාසියක මුද්‍රණය වෙන්න  ඕනේ  කියලා මම විශ්වාස කරනවා."

අපි 2017 ලංකා කොමික් කොන් හිදී අ-සාමාන්‍ය (Extra-Ordinary) කොමික් කථා පෙළ දියත් කරන්න බලාපොරොත්තු වෙනවා. දියත් කිරීම සිදු නොවුනත් ඒ පිළිබඳ සාකච්ඡා කිරීමට එහි නිර්මාතෘ වරු කොමික් කොන් මුද්‍රණාලයත් සමඟ එකතු වන්නට බලාපොරොත්තු වෙනවා.

මුද්‍රන ගාස්තු ගැන ප්‍රසිද්ධියේ කථා කරන්න අපි තවම සූදානම් නොවුනත්, ප්‍රබල මිල අඩු තත්වයක් බලාපොරොත්තු වෙන්න ඔබට පුළුවන්. මෙමගින් අපට වෙළඳසල් හා බෙදාහැරීමේ මිල දාරයන් එකතු කළ පසුත් පාඨකයින්ට අඩු මිලකට උසස් තත්වයේ දේශීය කොමික් පොත් මිලදී ගැනීමට හැකිවනු ඇත.

Nickelodeon Comics Editor, Joan Hilty, is Coming to Comic Con

Joan Hilty, the Comics Editor for Nickelodeon, directing comics programs for Avatar: The Last Airbender, Legend of Korra, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, among others, working with publishers IDW, Dark Horse, Oni, Panini, Boom! and Papercutz.

 She is also founding editor-in-chief of Pageturner, a New York City-based book producer and agency specializing in literary comics and graphic novels.

From the mid-90s to mid-2000s she was a senior editor at DC Comics/Vertigo, editing Cartoon Network comics, Batman, Flash, Birds of Prey, and many Vertigo projects, including G. Willow Wilson's comics debut Cairo.

Joan is super excited about meeting Asian fans of Avatar and Korra and TMNT and she's also bringing some cool stuff with her to give away- including comics and posters.

යමාටෝ වන් : ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ ප්‍රථම ඇනිමේ හා මාන්ගා ව්‍යාපාරික ව්‍යත්නය

නව ව්‍යාපාරයක් පටන් ගන්නවට වඩා කරන්න අපහසු දේවල් බොහොමයක් තියනවා. යුද්ධ කරන එක, ස්වයං සැත්කම්, ට්‍රාන්ස්ෆෝමර්ස් බලන එක වගේ දේවල්. හැබැයි ව්‍යාපාරයක් පටන් ගන්න ඕනම කෙනෙකුට සුළු සුළු අභියෝගයන්ට මුහුණ දෙන්න වෙනවා. විශේෂයෙන්ම ඔවුන් කරන සෑම දේකම වැරදි නිතර හොයන්න සැදි පැහැදී ඉන්න අය ඉන්න අය ඉන්න නගරයක. ඔබට ස්ථීර හා පූර්ණකලීන ආදායමක් ලැබෙන වෘත්තීයයක් අත හරින්න වෙනවා වගේම දවසකට පැය 12කට වඩා මහන්සි වෙලා වැඩ කරන්න සිද්ධ වෙනවා. ඒ මදිවට ඔබ වටේ ඉන්න 'යාළුවෝ' බලන් ඉන්නේ ඔබට කොයි වෙලාවේ වැරදෙයිද කියලා.

ඒත් ඔබ කරන දේ ඔබ දිගටම කරගන යනවා. එහෙම කරගන ගිහින් ඔබ කොහොම හරි සාර්ථක වෙනවා.

"හුඟක් දෙනෙක් අපිට උපදෙස් දෙනකොට කිව්වේ ඇනිමේ වලට ලංකාවේ එච්චර ඉල්ලුමක් නැහැ කියලා," යමාටෝ වන් හි  සම නිර්මාතෘ වන ටැමි ෆුකී අපට පැවසුවා. "ඒ වුනාට අපි කල්පනා කළේ  ඇනිමේ/ මාන්ගා වලට ඇති තරම් රසිකයෝ නැතිවෙන්න විදිහක් නෑ කියන එක. ඒ අයට අවශ්‍ය අවකාශය නෑ කියන එක අපි තේරුම් ගත්තා."

ටැමි සහ තව නිර්මාතෘ කෙනෙක් වන ක්ලින්ටන් ඩි ක්‍රෙට්සර් හට ලංකාවේ සමර්පිත ඇනිමේ හා මාන්ගා ව්‍යාපාරයක් පටන් ගන්න ඔනේ කියන අදහස අවුරුදු ගානක ඉඳන් තිබුනා. ඒක ලංකාවේ ගැටවර වයසේ අයට හා වැඩිහිටියන්ට එකසේ රසවිඳින්න පුළුවන් අළුත් විනෝදාත්මක දෙයක්. "සාමන්‍යයෙන් කුඩා දරුවන්ට අරන් දෙන්න පුළුවන් සෙල්ලම් බඩු තියන සාප්පු ඕන තරම් තියනවා වුනත් නව යොවුන් පරපුරට හා ගැටවර වයසේ ළමයින්ට හරියන තෑගි හොයන්න සාමන්‍යයෙන් අමාරුයි නේ?"

සමහර අය ඇනිමේ දකින්නේ ළාමක දෙයක් විදිහට වුනත්, ටැමි හා ක්ලින්ටන්ට එය ඔනෑම වයසක කෙනෙක්ට රසව්ඳින්න පුළුවන් දෙයක්. 

ඔවුන් ගාව ප්‍රේම කථා, ත්‍රාසජනක කථා,  ක්‍රීඩා වටා නිර්මාණය වන කථා (ස්ලෑම් ඩන්ක්, ඉනීශල් ඩී) චරිතකථාමයන් (ඔසාමු ටෙසුකා) හා ආහාර සම්බන්ධ මාතෘකා (යකිටාටෙ ) වැනි  විවිධ මතෘකා ආවරණය කරන නිකුත් කිරීම් තියෙනවා. 

සැපයුම තිබුනට වෙළඳපළේ ඉල්ලීම තිබුනද?

“ව්‍යාර්ථ අදියරෙන් පසුව මේ වෑයම ඉදිරියට ගෙන යන්න ඔනේ කියලා තීරණය කරපු ඔවුන් 2016 වසරේදී ලංකා කොමික් කොන් උළෙලෙහි ප්‍රදර්ශන කුටියක් මිලදී ගත්තා. “අපි බලාපොරොත්තු වුනේ අඩුම ගණනේ උළෙලට ආ අයගෙන් සුළුතරයක් හෝ ඇනිමේ ගැන දැනුම තියන අය වෙයි කියලා.” ටැමි අපිට පැවසුවා. “එදා තමයි අපිට තේරුනේ අපි ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ ඉන්න ඇනිමේ/ මාන්ගා රසිකත්වය කොච්චර අවතක්සේරු කළාද කියන එක. ඔවුන්ගේ ඇනිමේ හා මාන්ගා දැනුම, එයට ලැදිකම ගැන අපි හුඟක් මවිත වුනා.”

The after-party will be on Sunday the 27th at the Steuart by Citrus (you may know it better as "The Steuart"), from 6pm onwards.
